This month we spoke to Amy Woodhouse - project lead for our team of students from the University of Brighton.

Amy is a final-year International Tourism Management with Marketing student at the University. With her fellow students, Sasha, Nicola and Sumi, Amy joined Healthwatch B&H for the month of May as part of a consultancy project for their final assessment.

They undertook a social media takeover, sharing valuable insights on student wellbeing and new ways of connecting young people with their local health services. Find out more here.

What drew you to Healthwatch and to gaining experience in the voluntary / charity sector?

"I was drawn to Healthwatch because of its community-focused mission and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. Coming as a beginner in marketing, I was excited by the chance to apply my skills in a meaningful way and support a cause that prioritises people’s voices, especially those who are often underrepresented in health and care.

“I also wanted to gain insight into the voluntary and charity sector as it’s a space where communication and engagement can have a powerful impact."

You’ve been supporting Healthwatch’s communications strategy and undertaken a social media takeover for the month of May.

Can you tell us about your experiences?

"It’s been a really valuable and hands-on experience. I’ve helped shape and schedule content for Instagram (and other channels), focusing on raising awareness of Healthwatch’s work and encouraging people to get involved. I also worked on improving the visual branding using Canva and made sure our posts were informative yet accessible.

"Taking over the social media for the month has given me insight into audience engagement, how to maintain a consistent tone, and the importance of adapting content for different platforms. I’ve really enjoyed being part of a small, passionate team where my ideas were welcomed and put into action."

What do you think are the main health priorities for students in Brighton and Hove? And would you give new students any advice when arriving in the autumn?

Mental health is definitely a key priority for students, especially with the pressures of university life, isolation, and cost of living worries. Access to support services and raising awareness of what’s available is crucial. I also think there’s a need for better support around healthy lifestyles.

"My advice to new students would be to not be afraid to ask for help and get familiar with local services early on. Brighton has a lot of support networks, it’s just about knowing where to look.

What are your plans when you finish University?

“I’m hoping to build a career that combines my passion for marketing with meaningful causes, either in the tourism industry or the non-profit sector. My experience with Healthwatch has shown me how rewarding it is to use communication skills to empower and support others, so I’m open to roles in community engagement, digital marketing, or campaign work, ideally in Brighton or somewhere equally vibrant.”

What do you think are the best bits about living in Brighton and Hove?

"Brighton is such a lively and inclusive city, you really feel like you can be yourself here. I love how close everything is, from the beach to the Lanes, and there’s always something going on. The community is diverse, creative, and passionate, and there’s a great mix of nature and city life. For students especially, it’s a great place to grow both personally and professionally.

"It had been my dream since I was 12 to move away for university, so I was incredibly excited and grateful when that became a reality in Brighton. It’s lived up to everything I hoped for and more.”

Thank you to Amy and the team for their fantastic work over this period. We'll miss you but so appreciate everything you've achieved, and we're excited to see what you do next!
