Children in care

There are around 2,000 children in Sussex currently living in care. Research shows that children and young people in care are much more likely to have both physical and mental health needs than their peers.

Almost half of children in care (45%) experience a mental health disorder, rising to 72% for those living in residential care. Around 40% of children in care also have long-term health issues such as dental neglect, developmental delays, speech and language difficulties and vision problems.

It is vital that health services meet the needs of children in care and care leavers.

Have your say

NHS Sussex is asking for feedback from care experienced Children & Adults, Foster Carers and Professionals, to share views on health services they have accessed.

This dedicated feedback platform has had over 1,500 views this year so far, and they've heard from care experienced young people on topics that matter to them, including mental health and dental care.

Offer feedback now

The feedback can be given by completing one of the surveys designed for your age group or role, by selecting from the boxes on the right. You can complete more than one survey - one for each service or appointment you have accessed, if you choose.

Your feedback will be used to help improve the way health services are provided – they read every feedback survey when it’s completed. You can also use the interactive map to 'pin drop' where you would like health services to be, to make them more accessible for you. By sharing where you would like to access health services, you will help make changes to health services in the future.

Raising awareness

A new film has been produced for healthcare professionals in Sussex with input from care experienced young people, which focuses on the importance of a trauma-informed approach.
