Grove Park

Grove Park is a hospital that has two acute mental health wards for adults of working age, and two nursing units for older adults with complex needs. Each of the acute mental health wards has nine beds and the nursing unit has 58 beds.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) conducted this assessment because they had received information of concern relating to the hospital. They assessed 11 quality statements over safe and well-led. 

At this inspection the CQC saw that staff were recording incidents and that incident form were reviewed regularly to identify themes and trends. Staff could access reflective practice sessions to review how they felt about incidents and to look at ways they could improve the service. Staff had received training in safeguarding people and could explain what action they would take to keep people safe from abuse.

Staff involved people in planning and managing their own risk. Staff reviewed restriction and removed them if they were unnecessary. The hospital employed enough staff to keep the people using the service safe. Staff checked the hospital environment daily to ensure it was safe for the people admitted to the service. 

The senior leader employed at the hospital had the skills and experience to needed for their roles. Staff felt able to speak up if they had concerns about the quality of care being provided at the hospital. CQC saw that the multidisciplinary team employed at the hospital worked well together.

However, the hospital director was in the process of embedding new ways of working around governance and learning from incidents.

People's experience of this service

People were positive about the service. They told the CQC that they were confident in the staff team and their ability to keep them safe. They told CQC they were receiving the care and treatment they need. People were aware of their treatment plans and knew their discharge plans.
