Gate Cottage Rest Home is a residential care setting providing accommodation and support for people with a wide range of health conditions. This service supports older people including those with physical and mental health conditions. At the time of the inspection, there were 11 people living at the home.
- The service was previously rated as good. CQC carried out this assessment to confirm whether the rating of good remains accurate.
- People and their relatives spoke positively about the care and support provided and said they felt safe living at the home. Staff prided themselves with providing care which felt like home from home. Throughout the inspection, CQC observed warm, respectful and unhurried interactions between staff and people using the service.
- Medicines were managed safely, supported by effective systems to maintain robust oversight. Staff were suitably trained and they worked well with external professionals to achieve positive outcomes for people.
- The home was clean, well maintained and free from environmental hazards, with appropriate safety checks completed and equipment kept in good working order.
- Staffing levels were consistent, with no reliance on agency staff.
- Care plans were in place and generally reflected people’s assessed needs and risks. Care plans were person-centred, clearly detailed people’s needs and wishes. Risks had been robustly assessed and clear guidance was in place for staff to follow to minimise these.
- Overall, the service provided a calm and well-managed environment with a stable workforce and positive leadership.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives without exception spoke positively about their experiences of the service and the quality of care provided. One person said, “[Staff] are absolutely amazing here. I couldn’t ask for more. Whether they are just popping in for a chat or to bring me a cup of tea, nothing is too much trouble.” A relative said, “The staff at the home are wonderful, extremely friendly and show great patience in coping with people at an advanced stage of their lives and with many difficulties related to the ageing process.”
People were offered choices and were encouraged to spend the day doing activities they wanted. People were connected with the local community and often had trips out to spend time there.
Mealtimes were well organised and tailored to people’s individual needs and preferences. One person said, “The food here is the best part. Look, wouldn’t you want to have meals like this?”
People had a good relationship with the management team and told us they wouldn’t hesitate to raise any concerns they had.
Throughout the day, people were supported in a manner that promoted their privacy, dignity and independence.
