This month we spoke to Lorna Holloway who is the Community Development Officer for Age UK West Sussex Brighton and Hove (WSBH) and is supporting their brand-new men's meet-up group in Shoreham-by-Sea.

Age UK WSBH has established men’s meet-up groups across Sussex. Could you tell us a bit about these groups?

"Our men’s meet-up groups run across West Sussex, Brighton & Hove, bringing local men together for friendly conversation, shared interests, and community connection. Each group has its own personality with some meeting in cafés and others, like our new Shoreham group at The Royal George, in pubs, but they all offer a relaxed, welcoming environment where men can have a chat, and make new friends.

"There’s no pressure or agenda just a great space to connect."

What is the thinking behind a group specifically for men?

"We know from our work in the community, that men can sometimes find it harder to build or maintain social networks, especially after retirement or bereavement. Some older men would like to socialise a bit more but don't know where to go, especially if they aren't interested in a particular sport or hobby.

"The men’s meet-ups were designed to give men a comfortable setting where they can talk openly, share experiences, and just be themselves."

What kind of feedback have you received from local men taking part?

T said that he really enjoyed himself and loved the football chat. His daughter was hugely complimentary and said that it's been a long time since her Dad went out independently, so this was a big deal and worrying for the family. She said that it was brilliant knowing that they were leaving him in a group where they knew he was safe and cared for."

"F said that the volunteer was brilliant! He said he felt very welcome and thought they did a great job with all the age groups that are there, as some are much younger than others. He's looking forward to coming back next time!"

Considering the Men's Health Strategy for England*, and recent Healthwatch research*, how do you think social connections can help men with their health & wellbeing?

Man laughing.

“Research shows that strong social connections can benefit both physical and mental health. Loneliness and isolation can contribute to stress, low mood, and poorer health outcomes, but connecting and being part of a community can make a real difference.

"It boosts mood, gives structure to the week, and encourages men to open up about how they’re doing. Often, these conversations can be the first step toward seeking help or making positive lifestyle changes.”

If someone was curious about attending an Age UK WSBH men’s meet-up, what would you tell them?

"If you're keen to get out and socialise with other men in your area, why not pop down and give it a go. You don’t need to book or commit, and there’s no pressure to talk, you can simply come for a tea or coffee and see what it’s like.

"The groups are friendly, informal, and welcoming to all men, whether you’re looking to make new friends, get out of the house more, or just enjoy some company. Most people say they wish they’d come along sooner!"
